Project Shakti
“An initiative aimed at creating women entrepreneurs who can earn their own livelihood and gain a sense of self-esteem and respect within their community.”
Considering India’s poor score on gender inequality, we recognized an opportunity to continue empowering and supporting underprivileged women. Further loss of jobs during the pandemic and the difficulties faced by women to support their families led us to set up a vocational tailoring center that would provide self-employment in their homes and allow them to live with dignity. Our efforts resulted in the creation of 50 home entrepreneurs.
Goals
- Established a vocational training center with the support of 2 corporates
- Facilitated the training of 50 women by teaching them to make aprons, cleaning cloth and overcoats required by industries in the area.
- Conducted a yard sale and used the funds towards buying sewing machines.
- Negotiated a deep discount for the sewing machines from, CEO of USHA Sewing Machines.
- Donated sewing machines which the trainees can take home to start a business.
- Created a platform through which Shakti trainees can exchange design ideas and customer information.
- Created a suite of services that Care for Chennai continues to offer – simple product designs (innovative bag designs, cushion covers etc..), introduce them to corporate clients / customers and continue to help with simple social media marketing and graphic design services.
